Choose Your Anode Material

Zinc Anode

The traditional choice for corrosion protection, particularly associated with saltwater use.

Zinc has been widely used for many years as a sacrificial anode material in marine applications.

Choose Zinc if:

• You prefer the traditional zinc anode material
• Your existing setup uses zinc anodes
• You predominantly operate in saltwater
• You want to keep the same anode material already fitted to your outboard

Aluminium Anode

Aluminium-alloy marine anodes provide effective corrosion protection and are commonly used on modern marine applications.

They are suitable for a broader range of water conditions, including salt and brackish water, and can also be a useful choice where the boat operates in varying conditions.

Choose Aluminium if:

• Your existing setup uses aluminium anodes
• You operate in salt or brackish water
• You want a modern marine aluminium-alloy sacrificial anode
• Your boat operates in varying water conditions

Important – Zinc or Aluminium?

Try to keep the anode system consistent.

Where possible, we recommend using the same type of sacrificial anode material throughout the engine/installation rather than randomly mixing zinc and aluminium anodes.

If you are simply replacing one existing anode and are unsure which material to choose, selecting the same material as the other anodes already fitted is generally the simplest option.

For unusual installations or predominantly freshwater use, check the engine/boat manufacturer's recommendations for the most appropriate sacrificial anode material.

What Does the Gear Case Anode Do?

A sacrificial anode is designed to corrode preferentially, helping protect expensive underwater components such as the:

• Gear case
• Lower unit
• Fasteners
• Other submerged metal components

The anode is a service item.

It should be inspected regularly and replaced when significantly consumed, damaged or no longer providing adequate protection.

Never paint or coat the working surface of a sacrificial anode, as this can prevent it from functioning correctly.
