LIGHT DUTY – SC-18 Series – Engines Up To 55 HP

or

HEAVY DUTY – SC-16 Series – Engines Up To 150 HP

The Light Duty and Heavy Duty cables are designed for different steering helm systems.

Do not select solely by engine horsepower.

LIGHT DUTY – Up To 55 HP

Multiflex SC-18-XX Series

Designed for corresponding light-duty mechanical steering systems.

Suitable for selected:

• Outboard applications
• Engines up to 55 HP
• Light-duty steering helms

Multiflex Code:

SC-18-XX

XX represents the cable length in feet.

For example:

SC-18-10 = 10 ft Light Duty Steering Cable

The SC-18 cable family is associated with light-duty helm systems including Multiflex Lite 55 and corresponding M58/SSC13-type applications.

• Engines up to 150 HP
• Heavy-duty mechanical steering helms

Multiflex Code:

SC-16-XX

XX represents the cable length in feet.

For example:

SC-16-10 = 10 ft Heavy Duty Steering Cable

Multiflex specifies the SC-16-XX for its 150 mechanical steering systems and power boats with engines up to 150 HP. It also cross-references Dometic/SeaStar SSC62 and Ultraflex M66 applications.

Heavy Duty Specifications

• Stainless-steel output ends
• Heavy-duty mechanical steering cable
• Cable travel: approximately 230 mm / 9"
• Minimum bend radius: approximately 200 mm / 8"
• Suitable for corresponding heavy-duty mechanical helms
• Multiple lengths available

Light Duty & Heavy Duty Are NOT The Same Cable

PLEASE CHECK YOUR EXISTING CABLE ENDS AND HELM BEFORE ORDERING.

Do not assume that because your engine is under 55 HP you automatically require the Light Duty cable.

Likewise, horsepower alone does not confirm compatibility with the Heavy Duty cable.

You need to check:

• Existing cable type
• Cable end fittings
• Helm connection
• Existing cable reference
• Required cable length
• Steering system

Compare the cable ends shown in our product photographs with your existing cable.

If the cable looks similar to yours, this does not always mean it is the correct one for your steering system.

How To Choose The Correct Cable Length

VERY IMPORTANT – CHECK YOUR LENGTH BEFORE ORDERING

Selecting the wrong cable length is one of the easiest mistakes to make when replacing a mechanical steering cable.

DO NOT CHOOSE THE LENGTH BASED ON BOAT LENGTH.

A 15 ft boat does not necessarily require a 15 ft steering cable.

The required length depends on the installation and cable routing.

Replacing an Existing Steering Cable

For this cable type, a useful way to determine the size is:

STEP 1

Measure the black outer cable casing / conduit only.

STEP 2

Add approximately:

18 inches / 45 cm

to the outer casing measurement.

STEP 3

Convert the result to feet.

STEP 4

If the measurement falls between available cable sizes:

ROUND UP TO THE NEXT WHOLE FOOT.

This outer-conduit + 18" measuring method is also published for corresponding SC-18/M58 steering cables.

Even Easier – Check Your Existing Cable Marking

Before measuring, inspect your existing cable carefully.

The cable may already have the type and length printed on the outer casing.

For Multiflex cables, the final number represents the cable length.

Example:

SC-18-10

means:

• SC-18 = Light Duty cable family
• 10 = 10 ft

Another example:

SC-16-14

means:

• SC-16 = Heavy Duty cable family
• 14 = 14 ft

This is usually the easiest way to identify the replacement if the markings are still readable.

Existing cable marked:

SC-18-12

Light Duty – 12 ft

Existing cable marked:

SC-16-15

Heavy Duty – 15 ft

Cable Length Is NOT Just The Black Outer Casing

This is important.

If you measure only the black outer casing and order that measurement as your cable length, you may order a cable that is too short.

For replacement measurement:

Measure outer casing + approximately 18" / 45 cm

Then round up to the appropriate whole-foot size.

Compare our product photographs with your old cable.

3. What length do you require?

Check the existing cable marking or correctly measure your old cable.

4. Is your helm compatible?

The cable must match the steering helm connection.

Do not order based only on horsepower or boat length.
