What Is a Switch Box?
The switch box is an important part of the outboard's CDI ignition system.
It receives the relevant electrical signals from the stator and trigger system and controls the ignition output to the coils.
A faulty switch box can be associated with ignition problems such as:
- No spark
- Intermittent spark
- Loss of spark on one or more cylinders
- Difficult starting
- Engine cutting out
- Ignition problems at certain RPM
Important
These symptoms can also be caused by the stator, trigger, ignition coils, wiring, grounds or other electrical components.
The switch box should be properly diagnosed before replacement.

⚠️ IMPORTANT – Some V6 Engines Use TWO Switch Boxes
Many applicable Mercury / Mariner V6 2-stroke engines use two switch boxes, with one unit controlling each bank of three cylinders.
This listing is for ONE switch box unless otherwise stated.
If diagnosing a V6 ignition problem, check both switch boxes and the complete ignition system.
Do not automatically assume that replacing one switch box will correct an ignition fault without proper testing.
⚠️ VERY IMPORTANT – Check Serial Number
Mercury / Mariner ignition parts are highly dependent on the engine serial number.
Do NOT order by horsepower alone.
The same horsepower engine can use different switch boxes depending on:
- Model
- Engine generation
- Serial number
- Number of cylinders
- Ignition-system specification
- Original switch-box part number
Please compare your COMPLETE serial number with the fitment information above.
⚠️ Check the Original Part Number
For the safest identification, compare the number on your original switch box with one of the replacement numbers listed above.
Common references include:
332-5524
332-5524A1
332-7778
332-7778A1
332-7778A3
332-7778A5
332-7778A6
332-7778A9
332-7778A12
⚠️ Appearance Does Not Confirm Fitment
If the switch box looks the same as the one fitted to your engine, this does not always mean it is the correct part for your outboard.
Mercury used several ignition modules that can look very similar externally but have different internal specifications and applications.
Please check the original part number and complete engine serial number before purchasing.
Before Installing Your New Switch Box
If your original switch box has failed, we recommend checking the complete ignition system before fitting the replacement.
Check:
- Stator output
- Trigger output
- Ignition coils
- Spark plug leads
- Engine grounds / earth connections
- Switch-box wiring
- Electrical connectors
- Burnt or corroded terminals
- Damaged or melted wiring
- Battery and charging system where applicable
A fault elsewhere in the ignition system can cause similar symptoms and may damage a replacement component.
Aftermarket Replacement Part
This is a high-quality marine-grade aftermarket replacement part.
It is not a genuine Mercury, Mariner or Force component.
OEM manufacturer names and part numbers are provided for identification and compatibility reference only.
The component is designed as a replacement for compatible applications using the 332-5524 / 332-7778 switch-box family.
Buyer Responsibility
It is the buyer's responsibility to confirm compatibility before purchasing.
