What Is the CDI Unit?

The CDI / ignition control module is an important part of the outboard's ignition system.

It controls the ignition system and helps ensure the spark is delivered at the correct time for proper engine operation.

A faulty CDI module can be associated with symptoms such as:

No spark
Intermittent spark
Difficult starting
Engine cutting out
Misfiring
Loss of ignition when hot
Irregular engine operation

Important

These symptoms do not automatically mean the CDI is faulty.

Similar problems can be caused by other ignition or electrical components, so proper diagnosis is recommended before replacing the CDI unit.

Before Replacing Your CDI Unit

CDI units are frequently replaced when an engine has a no-spark or intermittent ignition problem, but the CDI is not always the cause.

Before installing the replacement, we recommend checking the complete ignition system.

Check:

Ignition coil
Spark plugs
Spark plug caps and leads
Charging / exciter coil where applicable
Pulse / trigger components
Stop / kill circuit
Engine earth / ground connections
CDI wiring
Electrical connectors
Burnt or corroded terminals
Damaged or melted wiring

A fault elsewhere in the ignition system can produce symptoms similar to a failed CDI module.
